A revised edition of Manning's 1988 Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa, 1880-1985. Covering the French-speaking countries of west and central Africa, it focuses on the development of new African institutions and a new African culture, based on precolonial African heritage and the connections of Africa with French and Belgian colonial powers.
